One entry for each length.
- Enter feet and whole inches in their own fields. For 5 ft 10 3/4 in, enter 5 feet, 10 inches, 3 above the fraction line, and 4 below it.
- Choose add or subtract, then enter the second measurement. Leave fraction fields blank for a whole-inch measurement.
- Read the live answer. Choose ft–in, inches, decimal feet, or metric below the result. Calculate saves a valid calculation to local history.
How the example works
Convert both lengths to inches: 5 ft 10 3/4 in is 70 3/4 in, and 2 ft 4 1/2 in is 28 1/2 in. Together they make 99 1/4 in. Since 96 inches is 8 feet, the result is 8 ft 3 1/4 in.
To subtract, choose the minus sign. For example, 8 ft − 2 ft 6 in = 5 ft 6 in.
Feet and inches, or decimal feet?
5.5 decimal feet means 5 ft 6 in, not 5 ft 5 in. Select Decimal feet when your measurement uses a decimal point. Each measurement can have a different unit; Inch Plus converts them before adding or subtracting.
Take the answer to your tape.
Keep the exact answer, or select the nearest 1/8, 1/16, 1/32, or 1/64 inch under Tape rounding. The rounded value is shown separately so you can see what changed.
For repeated sections, use the equal-parts calculator. For inch-only work, use the fraction calculator.
